249. British Isles On The Disney Dream
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A Disney cruise without tropical beaches sounds wrong until you hear what happens when the Disney Dream heads for the British Isles. We’re joined by our friends Andrew and Meredith, two experienced DCL fans who still chose to fly from Orlando to England for a seven-night sailing out of Southampton. They break down what made this itinerary feel special, from hidden sail away spots to the moments that felt like pure Disney magic in places Disney doesn’t visit often.
We dig into what a port heavy Europe cruise really feels like: cooler weather, fewer kids, and indoor events that can fill up fast. Then we get into the ports. Liverpool goes full Beatles with Penny Lane, Strawberry Field, and a museum deep dive, capped by a jaw-dropping community send-off with fireworks. Scotland brings the reality of long drives from Greenock and a reminder that tides can literally change how you get on and off the ship. Ireland delivers with a Jameson distillery tour in Cork via Cobh and plenty of local flavor, while Portland, England turns into the big Stonehenge debate, iconic history or just very famous rocks.
We also cover onboard highlights like Palo, standout crew service, Europe sailing merchandise, and an adults-only sail away tip from Meridian that we can’t wait to try ourselves.
If you’ve been curious about a British Isles cruise, a Disney Dream itinerary in Europe, or whether Disney excursions are worth it in unfamiliar ports, this one’s for you. Subscribe, share with a Disney fan, and leave a rating and review so more listeners can find the show.

Welcome A Different Disney Sailing
AliceaHello everyone, I'm Alicea.
NathanI'm Nathan.
MerI'm Meredith.
AndrewAnd I'm Andrew.
AliceaAnd welcome to episode 249 of Adventures and Mouse Capades. Today we are heading across the pond for a Disney cruise line adventure that's a little different from the sailings that we usually talk about. Instead of tropical beaches and island ports, we are exploring the British Isles aboard the Disney Dream.
NathanJoining us are our good friends, Andrew and Mer. Now you may hear me call Andrew Doc because, well, he's a Doc and that's what we call him. Anyway, they recently returned from a seven-night sailing out of Southampton with stops in Liverpool, Scotland, Ireland, and Portland, not Maine, on England's beautiful southern coast.
AliceaNow, what makes this trip especially interesting is that Andrew and Mer aren't occasional cruisers. They live in Orlando, they know Disney Cruise Line. They could easily book a Caribbean sailing anytime that they want. So when they decide to fly all the way to England for a cruise, we knew we had to hear all about it.
NathanIndeed. So we're going to talk about all their favorite ports, their unforgettable experiences, what surprised them the most, and whether the itinerary lives up to the hype. Plus, we're going to ask why they didn't fly us over to England to go with them. So with that, Doc, Mer, welcome to the show.
AliceaWelcome.
MerThank you for having us. Good to be back.
AndrewThanks for
How Our Guests Became Disney Fans
Merhaving us.
NathanYeah. So before we dive in, Mer, you are a returning guest. But Doc, this is your first time. We always love asking kind of what everybody's Disney background was or is. Did you grow up going to the parks, you two? Did you just stumble into Disney because, oh hey, hap- we happened to move to Orlando? Like, how did this uh work for y'all growing up?
AndrewSo I grew up watching the old school Disney movies, particularly like Robin Hood and Jungle Books. So those were kind of a staple in our household. And my grandmother used to snowbird from Maryland down here in Florida in an area called Plant City. So there were several times we'd come down, and each time we came down, we went to uh Disney at that time, and we're talking like Disney's in the late uh 80s, early 90s, so completely different vibe for Epcot and everything.
NathanYes.
AndrewOther than that, really no affiliation with Disney. I've never worked for Disney. I don't have any plans to work for Disney. They don't really have a line of service for what I do. Uh they do have their own health clinics, but they're actually um contracted out to another third-party company, not strict strictly through Disney.
NathanYeah.
AndrewUh and then pretty much the guarantee was that if Mer moved up to Virginia for my training, we'd move back here, and here we are in Central Florida.
NathanExcellent. Now, Mer, you did do uh college program, right?
MerYes, I did. Yeah. So I um I'm Disney Disney bound all my life, and then yes, I came down to the college program, stayed down, worked here. Um, so yes, we did move out of state when we got married for Andrew's residency, but the the caveat was I'm coming back. So uh he came along with me and uh is is a Floridian and uh you know uh by default a Disney fan complimented me.
AndrewHappy wife, happy life, happy wife, don't get the knife.
AliceaThere you go.
Why The British Isles Itinerary Won
AliceaWell, before we dive into ports and pixie dust, you have almost unlimited access to going on cruises living in Orlando. What made you choose this British Isles sailing?
AndrewSo I mean for me personally, we've done the Caribbean and we've done the Caribbean, and it got to the point where you go to the same four or five ports over and over, it gets to the point where you don't get off the ship.
NathanYeah, you didn't want to go to Nassau again? I don't understand.
AndrewNo, we're uh you know, everybody loves Nassau. So we we kind of came up with this idea that if we're gonna do big cruises, we're gonna do more of a destination type cruise. So this year was the British Isles, two years ago it was Sydney repositioning to Honolulu. So we've just kind of made that decision to we love Disney, but we want to try something outside the normal realm for cruising. Would you agree, Mer?
MerYes. Um, and we we knew we wanted to go to England, and we had actually looked at doing a river cruise uh around the holidays. Yeah. It was fill up really quickly, so we that wasn't in the cards for this year. So we said, all right, well, let's just do London, we'll do England kind of on our own. We were looking around September, October timeframe, anyways, and as I was researching, happened to see that this was the same time frame as the British Isles cruise. And so we said, it's perfect. We get a best of both worlds, we get to do a little bit of England and we get a Disney cruise in the mix. So yeah.
NathanSo kind of previewing, we'll talk a lot about the details, but you know, if somebody gave you the same cruise budget to go do again, would you do this itinerary again? What's your kind of like log line for the cruise? Was it was it good?
MerIt was great, but I wouldn't do it again because I've already done it and loved it, and I would I would try something different. So not because we didn't love it and not because every port wasn't amazing. Uh, but I I personally probably wouldn't do it again because I want to do the the Norwegian or I want to do a transatlantic or I want to do a different itinerary.
AndrewYeah, makes sense. Yeah, and and I kind of feel the same. The cruise was great, the ports were great. Would I do it again? Probably not. If I was gonna do anything because I have Scottish heritage, I'd just go straight to Scotland and stay in Scotland for a few weeks or two weeks, whatever, whatever the Boss Lady lets me do. Um but yeah, we definitely want to still continue the cruise with Disney, but we true, probably maybe like Mer said, the Norwegian or the Mediterranean as our next kind of project. Yeah.
Weather Crowd Levels And Onboard Vibe
AliceaHow did the Dream feel on a port-intensive itinerary versus a typical Caribbean itinerary?
MerI don't know that it felt any different. This was only my second time on the Dream. Uh so it I almost felt like it it took, and the last time was uh I think it was 2018 or something, it was before COVID. So it's been a long time. So we almost had to re-acclimate ourselves. I kept I knew I was equating everything to the fantasy. I kept going, oh wait, no, that's not where it is because things are a little bit different. But I don't know that it felt any different, you know, doing this British Isles cruise versus versus a Caribbean. We did still have two days at sea, so I I think the ratio of sea days to ports wasn't that much different than like a week-long Caribbean cruise.
AndrewNo, but uh what I say what would be so different is because this is more of a cooler weather cruise, the amount of activities that they had indoors was a lot less than I thought there should have been. So they got very crowded very quickly. Because again, Caribbean cruise you are gonna be out on a deck, you're gonna be at the pool. I mean, there were still people, crazy people in the pool in 60 degree weather, but not as much as you would, you know, a regular cruise. So I think that aspect, that was the only difference I saw with this type of itinerary cruise. Yeah. Was that more indoor activities were needed to kind of space things out. Yeah. But still great, great cruise.
NathanThose those people who were in the pool are folks like us who live at the northern latitudes like Seattle in England, who at 60 degrees are like, that's shorts weather. Like, let's go.
AndrewAnd a bunch of Canadians. Yes.
NathanThere you go. Yep. What was the overall demographic of the cruise? Was it uh a heavy European, heavy American who who had flown over? Like what were the ages like?
MerUm it was probably, yeah, I was gonna say 50-50 between I think Canadians, Europeans, Brits, and then Americans who had come over to to do the itinerary. Um, as far as age range, I do feel like this swung a little bit older. I think we booked a lot of the adults only um excursions. Um they did have some families. There were a lot less kids, a lot less families, but there were some. But even on the excursions we went on, we were the youngest. So it was definitely an older group um than on the cruises that I'm used to. Kids, it was probably about you know the same as one of the longer itineraries, the Panama, the the Trans-Pacific. There were some kids, but not a lot.
NathanBecause this you guys uh you embarked on like what September 7th or 10th or something like that. And for it was a week-long cruise. So a lot of kids are gonna be back in school, so that's gonna limit your your population right there, too.
AndrewCorrect.
MerRight.
NathanYeah.
AliceaWell, I know the weather's a little different, but how different was the onboard vibe compared to like a Bahamian or Caribbean cruise?
AndrewSo that's the crazy thing. We I can remember several times sitting outside of cabana, and it's kind of in the 60s and light misty rain. And like we're sitting there in Liverpool, this would be a perfect time to have the Beatles on. But instead you have the Caribbean music telling you cabanas, so
NathanOh, weird.
AndrewYeah, so that was I think they could have done a better job there with with the music theme. I understand cabanas is cabanas is Caribbean themed, right? But I just think they kind of missed a golden opportunity to really integrate that aspect of the cruise into the entire cruise.
NathanInteresting. A rare content miss from Disney. They usually capitalize on all those opportunities.
AliceaI know they do that like around Christmas and for the different themed cruises.
NathanYeah.
AliceaI don't know if they've done it based on locations before.
NathanYeah. Besides, I bet I bet Apple Music and not like Apple, like your iPhone Apple, but like the company Apple that owns the the licensing for all of Beatles music probably wants a lot of money for those licenses. So yeah, that makes sense.
MerYeah. I mean, other than that, I I felt like the vibe was was pretty similar. Yeah, I mean, it was great, the same kind of activities, the same interactions. It wasn't it it was a fuller ship than I thought it was going to be, given the time of year and whatnot, but it was definitely not full compared to like a Caribbean. So, like even at dinner, you know, each couple in our area had their own table, so you were able to spread out a little bit more. Um, but I mean, other than that, I felt like the activities, the vibe, the energy was was very similar. It was a true Disney cruise.
Liverpool Beatles Immersion
NathanWe won't uh cover the the sea days as much. I'm really interested in the ports because that's really what was the the interesting and unique part about this cruise. Your first port stop was in Liverpool. Sounds like we didn't have Beatles on the ship, but uh what did you get to on on shore? Did you uh lean into happening to be there where it all uh where it all started?
MerOh we did, yes. Yeah. It was it was all Beatles all the time. Um, they did have some other excursions, but the primary excursions were were Beatles tours and whatnot. So we did a it was, I think it was even called like the Beatles Liverpool tour or something like that. And so it was a bus tour that took us all around the city and showed us. We we got to, we went and saw the Penny Lane sign and we got to get off at Strawberry Fields. Um, they drove us around and they were like, oh, in the Penny Lane song, this is the barbershop they talk about, and this is the fire station, and um, we got to see John Lennon and uh Paul McCartney's childhood homes. And then they do have a very large Beatles Experience museum. And so the tour ended there. Um so we got to go through the museum and um, you know, get our headsets and learn all about the the history of the Beatles, you know, from formation up until breakup and um a little bit more about each individual member, and you know, they had the gift shop and and so I'm uh I'm a big Beatles fan. I've grown up on the Beatles, my parents love the Beatles, so that was that was the stop I was most excited about, and it was definitely my favorite port.
NathanThat's awesome. Doc, what did you think of Liverpool?
AndrewSo I I loved it, other than their football teams there. Um it was great, and yeah, we heavily leaned into the Beatles thing. The Beatles experience was great. The the whole walkthrough tour with the audio headset was great. Weather started off kind of rainy and misty and then turned into a beautiful day, actually.
NathanVery Seattle.
AndrewYes, very Seattle. It was pretty much run in this of that. Um I was intrigued how a lot of stuff in the Penny Lane song aren't really actually truly on Penny Lane, they're a little further down um from the area, but it was still really cool for our tour guide to kind of point everything out.
NathanHot take. Doc calls the Beatles unauthentic. Got it.
MerI mean our tour guide did that, but yes.
AndrewYeah. Um, it was great. And and then, yeah, once you once we finished that, there was a Beatles statue near the ship that we walked to that we took our pictures with, and it was turning out, like I said, a beautiful day for that. So gorgeous photos, and yeah, the whole experience is awesome. Mer, do you want to talk about the the send-off?
MerSure. So one thing that was really cool about this cruise is I think because they only do the British Isles cruise once a year, um, so Disney cruise line doesn't go to a lot of these ports often. Right. And this was, I think, the first time that Dream had done this itinerary or done been based. So every single port we had some kind of send-off. Liverpool was a big, like it was a formal, like they had posted about it in the newspapers and on the news, and like the entire town of Liverpool came down to the port. Um, they had a fireworks show. Um, they had like red, white, and blue smoke for you know the British colors, the American colors. Um, they had a flyover, like it was this whole huge production to send us off as we sailed away. Um, of course, we played all the horns, and sure. I mean, it felt like the classic, like, you know, original days of cruising when everyone would come and wave you off and you felt like a celebrity, and it was really, really cool. So we went up to the top deck and watched that, and it was it was awesome.
NathanThat's neat. That's almost like when we um uh you guys were on the Panama Canal cruise in in March 2020 with us, and I remember everybody always running up to see the ship, uh, and and just tons of people everywhere. And we experienced it. We went through the old locks in 2013, Alicia and I did, and there were people like almost the whole length of the canal, like stopping along the road uh that that drives along uh side of everything, and and kids and every uh parents and adults, and just like watching the ship go by. And then uh, I don't think it's on the new locks. There is like this huge, like three or four story like building with all these observation decks on it.
MerYep, I remember that.
NathanWas that okay? So that was on the new one. That was yes, it was just like full of people. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
AliceaThat's cool. That's cool that he did that. Yeah.
Scotland Glasgow Excursion And Tides
AliceaOkay, so Scotland was your longest port day. How did you guys spend it?
MerWe went to so the actual port of Greenock, I think is how you pronounce it. Grenoch. It's kind of in between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Edinburgh was, I think, like almost a two-hour drive. Glasgow was about an hour drive. Um so you had to travel no matter where you went. We had been to Scotland before, we had done to Edinburgh before. We didn't really get to spend much time in Glasgow, so we knew we wanted to do Glasgow. So we took um, it was a bus tour that kind of took us around and showed us some of the highlights of Glasgow, and then it went to the Kelvin Grove Museum, which was kind of like an art museum. There was some natural history stuff in there. Um yeah, it was just this whole museum, and it had it's escaping me, but there was a pretty famous painting that was in there that you got to go and see. Um, it was cool. I we wanted to see Glasgow, and we thought that doing a bus tour was the best way to do it. It was probably my least favorite excursion of the four, but I mean it was still kind of cool to be able to really see to see Glasgow and and see everything there.
NathanYeah.
AndrewSo I would agree. Uh, while I love Scotland, I love Glasgow. That adventure is probably my least favorite. Uh the painting that Mary's referencing is uh Salvador dali's Christ on the Cross.
MerYeah, that's that one.
AndrewThe bus tour was great. We had a great little Scottish guy who was really fun with a really great accent. The bus tour took us around some of those main points. We stopped at a cathedral for a few minutes, walked around, looked at some buildings there. But the museum itself, other than the painting, uh I felt like I had stepped back into the Smithsonian back in the uh early 90s. Um just the the the exhibits were kind of dated and kind of just like the old stuffed animal kind of stuff that you used to see.
NathanYeah.
AndrewBut otherwise, I mean, my heart is forever in Scotland, so I loved it there. If I could retire there, I would. Mer would probably want to move to London instead.
MerYeah.
AndrewUm but out of all of them, probably our least favorite, but still is a good overall itinerary. If we did it again, we'd probably either book our own uh or do some sort of just or they did have an excursion, we could take a bus into uh Glasgow and it would just drop you off, and then you can walk around and then they would pick you back up. So we probably would do that one instead.
NathanGot it, got it. That was gonna be one of my other questions was did you book these, did you book everything through Disney?
MerYes.
AndrewYes,
Nathanokay, okay.
MerBecause it was A, because it was cities that we weren't terribly familiar with, but also we had heard a lot of things about depending on the tides, sometimes like the timing of the ship needed to change, and like there were so many unknowns that we were like, we we're going through Disney so that we know that we will get back to the ship, or there will be arrangements made for us. So we did want to go through Disney for all of our excursions.
AndrewAnd Mer brings up a very fascinating point that we forgot to mention. The tides do play a huge factor, particularly with the ramps on and off the ship. When we got to Liverpool, the ramp was pretty level. By the time we got back to get on the ship, it was probably at a 45 to 50 degree angle.
AliceaOh my gosh!
AndrewSo if you had a wheelchair or a power chair, going up it would have been very difficult. Going down, you could do without trying to take people out. But yeah, in these type of ports where there's such a tidal shift, you've got to be cognizant of that when you're booking your excursion, or if you have a little bit of a mobility issue about that kind of thing. Because there was another one where it was pretty steep also. It was at I think it was in Scotland as well. Yeah. Yeah, because the Ireland one wasn't steep at all. Nor was the one in Portland, yeah.
NathanInteresting. Usually the the the passenger terminals for the cruise ships have these gangways that have like lots of kind of back and forths that they can even it out so you don't have this huge uh uh abrupt thing. But actually, that's a great question. Were you using just like the normal gangway off the like deck one? Or was it um or deck two, whatever it was?
MerYeah, it was the normal gangway for every port except for I think it was Portland. Um we actually got on and off on deck four, like where we boarded to board the ship. Um got it, okay, embarkation day.
AndrewYeah, because most of these ports you'd have the normal disembarkation onto like the platform there for the port, and then from that platform there was another incline angle to get to the higher ground where you would do the rest of your excursion kind of thing.
NathanGot it. What was the weather like on your day in Glasgow? Was it was it nice? Could you see a lot of countryside or
Meryeah, it was um, I think pretty much every day it was kind of you know, kind of overcast what you would expect, but um not a lot of rain, not a lot of you know, not heavy fog or anything, so we could really see the scenery. Um, it was not as cold as I was anticipating. Like we packed like we would pack for an Alaska cruise, lots of layers to to to get ready. Um, and it was kind of high sixties
Andrewlow to mid-sixties,
Meryeah, like 60s. The
Nathanshorts and t-shirt weather. Got it. That's flip-flops and
MerChilly for us, but still beautiful.
AndrewAnd the thing that's crazy is we we're Floridians, so we're used to Florida rain. And when it rains here in Florida, it's torrential downpours.
NathanRight.
AndrewA rain, a heavy rain over there is a light misting. You may need a very light umbrella.
NathanUh-huh.
AndrewSo when they're saying it's it's raining, it's it's nasty weather, we're like, this feels great to us.
NathanI remember when we first moved out to Seattle, uh, we spent the first couple days with Alicia's grandparents, and it was drizzly like that. And her grandfather made some quip. He looked outside the window, he goes, Oh man, it's really coming down out there. And I looked out, I'm like, it's like foggy at best. What are we talking about?
AliceaOh different rain for sure.
NathanVery different, very different. Well, then you hopped across the uh the the water
Cork Whiskey Tasting In Cobh
Nathanthere. I forget what the heck that's called, but you you went from Liverpool, hopped over, or excuse me, we went from Scotland, hopped over to Ireland, over to Cork. You had a 6 30 a.m. start, or at least that's when the ship. Got there? Did you guys get off the ship that early?
AndrewWe did not.
MerAnd I don't think very many excursions left that early. So it was only if you were doing your own thing, I guess. But yeah, nobody got off that early.
AliceaWhat's available at that time anyway?
NathanYeah. What did you uh what'd you all get up to in Ireland?
MerYeah, I'll let Andrew talk about this one.
AndrewSo we since Cork uh the cut the port is actually called Cove, C-O-B-E. Okay. It was pronounced Cove. And it's the the closest port to Cork, Ireland. And in Cork, Ireland, there's a very famous distillery called the Middleton Distillery, which is home of Jameson, where all the Jameson usually is bottled and created and sent to the rest of the world.
NathanI'm familiar with it.
AndrewYes, yes. So we did a Jameson tour and whiskey tasting.
AliceaNice.
AndrewI'm normally not a huge whiskey fan. However, the whiskeys we had there since they were kind of exclusively made there were very delicious.
NathanThat's that that okay. Now I'm jealous. Now you got me. Although I really want to see Scotland too. So
Aliceadid any come home with you?
MerYes. Uh not much because we were dealing with uh suitcase limitations. But um uh our friends Heather and John, when we were in Ireland last year, they had gone to the distillery and had gotten some. So when they heard we were going, they were like, You've got to bring us this one bottle because they already finished theirs. So we we brought them a bottle back and then we got like a sampler of all the ones that we had tried for core us to bring home.
NathanOh, very cool.
AndrewYeah, he wanted a bottle of red breast, which is kind of an exclusive bottle in there. Very smooth. Uh though I think I think both our favorites was something called Green Spot.
NathanOh I don't think I'm familiar with that one.
MerI had never heard of it, but it was it's a it's similar to a red breast. It's like a single pot distilled um whiskey. It was very good.
NathanAwesome. Was that the whole day for you? Was going to the distillery, or did you uh have any time to walk around?
AndrewMostly. When we got back to Cove, we actually instead of going back to the ship, we walked around. Uh we found a pub and we kind of went and had a drink. I got myself a local cider, and Mer got her the local equivalent of Guinness, and I'm drawing a blank what it was called.
MerMurphys.
NathanOh, I'm pretty sure that's one that our daughter Caitlin absolutely loves. The cider? Uh no, the Murphy's. I remember her talking about it.
AndrewIt's like Guinness, but it's the local version of Guinness.
NathanYeah. Yeah. Cait Caitlin went uh with a couple of her friends over to Ireland last summer, was it last summer?
AliceaI think so, yeah.
NathanYeah, they definitely toured around a lot of different little towns and and uh she sampled a lot of local uh uh brews, that's that is for sure.
AliceaSo oh, the cider I'm thinking of is Magnur's.
NathanYes, that too. As long as it begins with M, you're good to go.
AndrewThe one that was there was it's called Rock Shore. Rock Shore, okay.
AliceaYes.
AndrewSo not quite as sweet as Magnur's.
AliceaOkay.
NathanGotcha.
AliceaI like the less sweet ones, yeah.
AndrewThen you would you would like a rock shore then.
AliceaDid Ireland live up to expectations?
AndrewOh, 100%.
MerFor sure.
AndrewThat was that was our second time there. We were there last year in Dublin and in oh crap.
MerGalway.
AndrewGalway, thank you. Uh, because we went to the Oasis concert there last year.
AliceaThat's right, yeah.
NathanThat's right.
AndrewUm, I equivalate Ireland to Scotland, they're pretty much very similar. The people were both so gosh darn friendly. And then the cultures are very similar because they're kind of both Gaelic-based cultures. Yeah so I could be happy in either one of those countries.
NathanAll right, hot take number two from Doc. Ireland and Scotland are indistinguishable from each other.
AndrewYou're gonna get me shot. Stop that. Somebody walking around and the Irish accent's gonna mug me.
NathanAll right. You uh you're you had one more stop.
Stonehenge And Salisbury Day Trip
NathanYou hopped back over to the Jurassic Coast in England there in the south. Exactly. Uh you stopped in Portland. What did you get up to in Portland, England?
MerThere was pretty much one excursion um that they had different variations of in Portland, which was Stonehenge. That was that was the big thing that was there. So we we booked a tour that went to Stonehenge um and then also went to uh Salisbury, England, which was the nearby town. Um we we both went to Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland, and that's where we met. So we were like, oh, that'll be really fun. We'll go to Salisbury, England. Um, so yeah, so we took the bus. It was a two-hour drive from the port to get to Stonehenge. Um, we had a couple of hours there. Um, they they provided lunch with the tour as well. So we got to go up, see, see the circle, see the stones, come back. Um, and then uh we took the bus. It was like 45 minutes into the town of Salisbury, and then it was the two hours back.
NathanThat is a lot of travel for a day. That's like almost five hours in a bus. Worth it?
AndrewUm I'm gonna say this and you're gonna give me a shout for this one too. Stonehenge is cool, but it's a bunch of rocks.
MerI mean, I was I was gonna say it a little more gracefully. I have seen it. Um, I I don't need to go back. We saw it, we took pictures, it was cool. Um it I I don't need to see it again, but I mean, it was it was cool.
NathanIs it as impressive as every like the media and everything makes it out to be? Or do you get there and you're like, okay, there's some some some people a long time ago tipped some rocks up on end.
AndrewYes and no. Both and no. Uh it's impressive thinking how old it is, but the fact that they still have no freaking idea really what it's there for. I mean, and it's in this large preserved park. I'm talking like hectoracres of park. It's in the middle of freaking nowhere. Yeah.
AliceaYeah.
AndrewUm, so there's if you like to do a lot of hiking and excursions, there's a lot of hiking paths and stuff to do, a lot of walking stuff. But other than that, you got the visitor center, you got uh the rock formation, and the the other thing is you can't actually go into the rock formation.
AliceaYeah, that makes sense.
AndrewSo it's only open during winter solstice and summer solstice. Any other time you have to stay outside and within like a ring around it, which you can walk around and see it. You actually can't go into the ring because unfortunately, people were defacing it and taking stones, so to preserve it, they want to keep it as well maintained as possible.
NathanThat's that's why Plymouth Rock is actually fenced off and you can't get to it because there's not a lot of it left anymore. Oh, people are great, huh? Yeah, yeah. What did you think of Salisbury?
MerIt was a very cute town. It was Sunday. Um, so a lot of things were closed, a lot of the businesses were closed. So um the the timing didn't work out there. It it was a really cool town, and there was a lot of stuff that I would have loved to have gone in and seen. But um, unfortunately, like the they have a very large cathedral there that has the Magna Carta in it.
NathanWhoa.
MerUh, so a lot of people went to go and see that. We we kind of just walked around. We had, I think, maybe 45 minutes in the town. Um, so we walked around, we found a little pub and restaurant and grabbed some lunch. Um, but yeah, there was a lot of little shops and a lot of other little pubs that I'm like, oh, this would have been really cool to go in and see. Um so it was a really cute town, but unfortunately, because we were there on a Sunday, there wasn't a lot to do.
NathanYeah, everybody's off having Sunday roast and nothing's open.
AndrewIt was a big thing, particularly at the little pub we stopped at. That's what a lot of people were there for, were for their Sunday roasts.
NathanYep, yep. It's a thing. That is that is for sure. That's for sure.
MerI will say Portland was the other port that did a really big organized send-off for us. Um, so when we got back from our excursion, they had they called it a rock choir. It was an all-adult choir that was standing on the dock there. They had speakers up and uh were singing all kinds of current music and everything. And so everyone was on their balconies and on the balconies on deck four and up on the top, just enjoying this beautiful concert. They sang for a good 45 minutes for us. Wow. And then as we were pulling away, they did a three-cannon salute for us. So they had the guys in full uniform, you know, packing the packing the cannon and blasted the cannon three times to send us off. And again, we we did the horns and everything. So that was that was a really cool send-off as well.
NathanThat's neat.
AliceaThat is cool.
AndrewAnd I'd like to kind of backtrack back in Ireland, it wasn't like a formal send-off, but everybody showed up in a town to see us all. And then the thing we forgot to mention is Make a Wish did a huge event on the Disney Dream that day. So as we got back, some of those buses were leaving with some of the kids. Um, so apparently that was a huge event that they had for all of Ireland for uh those kids.
NathanThat's very cool. I think I remember seeing something on like Disney Cruise Lines, like Instagram or something like that about that event. That's cool that that was on your uh on your itinerary.
MerYeah, it was really cool. The whole crew was up on deck four, like waving them all off, and you know, the kids were waving and blowing kisses, and it it was really cool to even just see the tail end of it, but apparently it was a spectacular event. The crew all the crew was talking about how much fun they had. Awesome.
NathanThat's very cool.
Food Service And Palo Highlights
NathanLet's actually, I want to talk a little bit about your experience on board. What was crew life? I mean, not your interaction with the crew, obviously, not uh that you were participating in crew life, unless Doc they put you to to work down there on uh deck one.
AndrewUh let me tell you about the crew bar.
NathanBut you know, you you guys have been on a bunch of Disney cruises. How was you know, food, entertainment, your weight staff, your your room host? Like what was your experience like this time?
AndrewI'll say that our state room attendant uh was the best one we've ever had. Wow. He was phenomenal. What was his name? Uh Edwin. No.
MerOh no, Alvin. Alvin.
AndrewAlvin, yes, thank you, Alvin. Um, so that was kind of the best uh state room attendant we've ever had. Very attentive, very friendly, always had a smile, always had a joke for us. Um just went out of his way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. So, yeah, one of our best state room uh hosts we've had. Um we also ran into an old friend, uh uh wait staff bartender named Eddie, who's been on several cruises with us. He was on the um Panama Canal debacle back in 2020. Um I'm pretty sure you remember uh Eddie there, Nate. Oh yeah. He fed us plenty of drinks, and no, he's doing well. So it was good to see a familiar cast crew member on the screen.
MerI was expecting to run into a few more because I feel like we've gotten to know so many. Um Eddie was, I think, really the only one that that we recognized, and he recognized us right away. Um so that was really cool. Um overall, the crew was great. You know, your your regular Disney crew, um, our our server up at Palo, we did Palo twice uh because we love it so much, and we had the same server both times, and she was amazing. Um, and we had some some good interactions. Um, so yeah, crew, crew and everything was great. Um, as far as food, Palo's phenomenal, the stuff on the pool deck, all of those. We were excited to see that they had added in the cantina bowls that were so popular on the wish class ships. So they had added those in. So we we frequented there for lunch. Um, the the dining room was what the dining room normally is. It's it's not our favorite, but I mean it's kind of what what we've come to expect just as far as cruise food in general.
NathanRight.
MerBut you know, yeah, our our dining room staff was great. And like I said, we went we came and sat down and they had a couple tables of multiple couples, but they they kind of said, Hey, we've got some empty tables. So if you guys would prefer kind of your own space, you know, we can we can so each couple we had our own table. So it was kind of nice just to be able to spread out a little bit and you know, just have a table the two of us to be able to kind of unwind and recap the day.
NathanYeah. Were you on late dining?
MerYes, we were on the late
Nathanport heavy and late dining had had capacity. Interesting. I guess it wasn't as booked of a cruise as it could have been for sure. So a little bit less capacity on there. I mean, again, you're in the middle of September. It school's a thing, at least here in the in the uh North America for sure.
MerYeah.
AliceaWas there any excursion you guys did that was worth every penny?
AndrewI would say definitely the the Beatles one.
MerI think the the one we did in Cork too, the distillery.
Andrew100% yes.
MerAnd we also got kind of a tour of Cork before we went back to the port. So both of those we really enjoyed, and I said they were definitely worth it. I mean, the Stonehenge ones was great, it was definitely worth it because it was something that I, you know, I wouldn't have gotten to see another way.
NathanRight.
MerI I would have chosen a different one for for Scotland for sure.
NathanGot it. How were the seas? You had two sea days. You know, you're going around in an area of the world that is known for, at least at times, having uh some interesting weather and uh some some rough seas. Any any issues there?
AndrewWe were extremely fortunate that it was completely flat the entire time we were on that cruise.
NathanWow.
AndrewWhich is a rarity for we were in partly in the Celtic Sea and the Irish Sea. And those at times, yes, can get pretty temperamental. But for this cruise, um I didn't even need to break out my sea bands, I didn't need to use any type of dramamine, which I rarely do anyways, but really no issues. And Mer had no issues also.
MerYeah, I'm usually the one that's a little bit more sensitive uh when we're on the waters, um, and and no issues at all. I mean, there were some times where we were sailing, and uh honestly, like I I look forward to the ship kind of rocking me to sleep.
NathanUh-huh.
MerAnd there were some nights where I I honestly couldn't even tell that we were moving. So it was very, very smooth.
Packing Tips Smooth Seas Best Port
AliceaYou guys said that you packed layers because the temperature is a little different over there. Was there anything you wish you had packed but you didn't?
AndrewHonestly, I think we actually overpacked some. So no. Um, it's it's still good to have layers because you never know. Yeah. Uh I think we just got very fortunate because the weather could have ranged anywhere from the low 50s to the uh upper 60s. So I think we just got fortunate where we had a good about a window of weather that we didn't need as much layers. But always with those type of northern type ports and cruises, you still want to do that just to be safe. Yeah.
MerYeah, I I don't think there's anything that I wouldn't have packed. Um, I will say we did join the Facebook group uh for this cruise. Uh, and so like I said, it was a very good mix of you know, Americans and either Brits or Europeans. So there were a lot of questions ahead of time of you know, what's the weather like? What would you recommend? Um, so we got a lot of advice and information of uh again, like you can have all four seasons in one day. So come prepared to be layered up, but also layer up so that you can strip down, you know, to shorts and a t-shirt if you need to, because you'll get the whole range of weather. So that really helped us.
NathanYeah. Yeah. Looking back on the the places that you did get a chance to visit, which port would you most want to spend a week in?
MerI would say Ireland. Um I I loved Liverpool and I loved the day that we spent there, but I don't know that there's enough that I would want to spend a week there. Um I think I think the that Cork was really one where I yeah, I could have I could have stayed there and and gone and checked out things, gotten to see the people, and um there was enough to do that I absolutely could have spent more time there.
AndrewYeah. I agree.
NathanYeah. Yeah, and plus Ireland is, I mean, all these countries, they're separate countries, but by American standards, they're not exactly huge. And so if you've got a car, uh you can get around pretty much all of Ireland and spend lots of time in in the places that you stop in a week. So uh lots of lots of opportunities to tour for sure.
AliceaSeven night British Isles or Seven night Alaska?
AndrewSo that's a tough one because while I love Ireland, Scotland, I think I love the ports more, but I'm a huge sucker for crab legs, and that's the best in Alaska, so I I can't really give you a straight answer one versus the other. Can I do both?
NathanAbsolutely, that's the right answer.
MerBoth, I agree. I would say both. Yeah. Uh there's they're different, they're similar enough, but they're so different that yeah, like it there's no comparison there. I would do both.
NathanYeah. Yeah. Who would you say this British Isles cruise is is right for? Like who is their target audience, or if if you were talking to a bunch of different people, who would you recommend, you know, be interested in doing this tour or this cruise rather?
MerI do think kind of the the activities and things to do. Um, and again, maybe it's because of the time of year it was and the weather. Um, I would say maybe older, I mean, you know, adults, you know, couples, friend groups. Like I said, there were kids on there, the kids did seem to have a great time, but I do feel like a lot of the activities and things to do did swing a little bit older, probably things and even the excursions that the adults would enjoy a little bit more.
NathanYeah.
MerUm, so yeah, I would I would say kind of adult groups or or couples may enjoy this a little more than than some of the families.
NathanThe the five-year-olds probably aren't gonna connect with the uh the Beatles history as much, maybe.
MerNo, not so much. And they can't swim or unless they're you know, you know, they can't go to the distillery.
AliceaYeah. No. Yeah.
AndrewI I would also say this would be a good cruise for someone who's looking to start to experience Europe. This would be a good starting point, good starting cruise because the ports you're going to are all English speaking, and it's relatively easy to get to while it's a long flight. The mode of transportation in at least England, Scotland, and and Ireland, the public transportation is is just phenomenal. So the ease of getting around in these areas and these ports was very vastly improved compared to some ports we've been in the past. So if you're looking to branch out of the United States and try a more European, this would be a good starting point to get your foot wet.
Characters Merch And Who It Fits
AliceaYou mentioned that Disney does this British Isles cruise once a year. Are there any special outfits for the characters or any special merchandise?
AndrewYes.
MerYes to both.
AndrewGoofy wears the kilt when you're in Scotland.
AliceaOh my gosh, that's excellent.
AndrewSo I have a picture of myself with Goofy and a kilt.
NathanLove it.
AndrewThat was the only one I saw. I don't know if you saw any other ones costume-wise for the characters.
MerNo, I mean the characters they had their their like regular sailing outfits, but I think that was the only one that I saw that was location specific. Right. Um, and yes, they they had him out the the night before and then the day of Scotland. So we we made sure we don't normally do a lot of the character interactions, but we made sure that we found Goofy and got in line to get our picture with him. Uh, and then there was it was it wasn't British Isles specific merchandise, but um, they had the the Europe sailing merchandise. And this was the last sailing before the transatlantic back. So um they I I was when we did the um the Australia cruise, it was kind of the tail end of the season as well, and so they were out of a lot of things. So I was kind of bracing for that, but they they actually still were very well stocked. They had a pullover, a t-shirt, a spirit jersey, they actually had ears that were specific to the Europe sailing and magnets and a lot of things. So we yeah, we stocked up on the Europe merchandise for sure.
Gatwick Transfers Surprise Wins
MerNice.
NathanOkay, so you two have cruised enough to know better than most. You've experienced a lot, especially on the Disney shifts. What was the biggest surprise to you out of this whole cruise?
MerI don't know that I would say um a surprise, but I will say kind of a first for us on this cruise was because normally we do sail out of Port Canaveral. We drive our car to the port and whatnot, because there was a lot more travel involved with this one. I think this is the first Disney cruise that we've taken where we did book the transportation. Um, and so we we went back and forth from the London Gatwick Airport and took the transportation there. So that was a that was a first for us, but it was absolutely worth it for many reasons. We didn't have to worry about kind of getting ourselves there and timing, but also when we got to the port in Southampton, it was well organized, but it was very crowded. Like when we first got there, it was overwhelming how many people were kind of queuing up and whatnot. But because we had taken transportation, there was a separate line for us. We got to basically almost walk right up to the front to get checked in to get to the escalator. So that wasn't a surprise, but it was it was a new experience for us and one that was was very helpful.
AndrewYeah, yes, I would agree with that 100%. Yeah.
NathanAnything on the opposite side of that coin? Any anything that you saw or experienced on this cruise that would be an opportunity for Disney to improve uh next year?
MerI can't think of anything. No.
NathanPerfect.
MerI mean, it was yeah, it was I'm sure there are things, but um, I mean, I think maybe alluding to what Andrew had said earlier, just because of the way. Weather and the temperatures, um, maybe some more activities inside because the the trivias, the things that you could do inside got very crowded very quickly. Yeah. Uh, because of the weather, and because um, I think also just because of the age demographic. So that would be the only thing. There were a couple of things that we tried to go to, and it was just, and we got there early, but it was just so crowded already that there was no place. So, I mean, that would be the only improvement that I would say is maybe try to plan plan accordingly for that.
NathanYeah.
AliceaWas there a moment that made you say, This is why we flew to Europe for this cruise?
AndrewAll of it. Um it was just everything in combination um between the cruise and the fact that we did London a few days beforehand, the fact that we, you know, we really liked those that area of the world. I also found and when we were boarding in Scotland, getting back onto the ship, their little um terminal there of that little um gift shop, and there was a guy who was uh painting uh photos, and he was painting uh a photo uh or a of what'd you say, still of stitch in a kilt with Mickey. I'll have Mer send you the photo of it, but just the whole it was really cool to see how the people in that area were really happy and grateful to have us there. So I think that kind of added a special flair and magic to the cruise.
NathanThat's awesome.
MerYeah, I think the the send-offs, um, which was something that like we just haven't experienced anything like that. The the Caribbean islands, they have so many ships in port every day, and then they're just so used to it. So kind of those send-offs where you you felt like a celebrity, um, and the send-offs and the playing the horns, and everyone was so excited that it was Disney. Um, I think those are the moments that really made it really, really cool. But the whole cruise was just amazing.
NathanThe number one question after any Disney cruise did you guys snag a placeholder for uh for another one?
MerWe did not. We did not. Not because we're not going.
AndrewYeah, not because we have a full schedule already for next year already.
NathanYeah.
AndrewSomebody has to turn 50 or something.
MerYeah.
NathanAllegedly.
MerSomebody we know is having a birthday and we have a trip already. So we've already got a couple commitments for next year. So uh it would be for 28, which yes, we could have done a placeholder, but we're like, we know we're gonna do one, but we yeah, we didn't end up doing a placeholder.
NathanYeah. We'll forgive you. We'll forgive you.
AndrewThank you, good sir.
NathanYeah, you're welcome. You're
Meridian Sail Away Plus Disney Favorites
Nathanwelcome.
AliceaIs there anything else? Anything you for uh we forgot to ask?
MerWhen we sailed away, instead of going to the the sail away party, we went up to Meridian um and grabbed a table right by the railing. And we had never done that before on the dream or the fantasy. And that was probably one of the best places like we've ever had to sail away. We sat there, um, you know, the bar opened and grabbed a cocktail, and we were just able to sit there and see everything from back there. Um, so uh I I recommend um for the adults, if you're on the dream or the fantasy, do you sail away from a Meridian and so
Nathanthat is a pro tip.
AliceaThat is, that is.
NathanWe're doing uh we just speaking of 2028, we just booked a a back-to-back on the fantasy, I think for February of 2028. So on one of those two sailings, we'll have to um, you know, test that out and see if that's still a a good uh a good suggestion. We'll we'll let you know how that goes. All right. Well, Mer, you've already had to uh endure this, but Doc, it's now time for Alicia's patented Disney torture test. But, you know, you're married to a Disney professional. So, you know, I think you've got this one in the bag, but still, seriously, dude, good luck.
AliceaAll right, yeah. Um, not torture, not patented. This is just your your Disney favorites from everything under Mickey's umbrella. So that includes Disney Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, all that stuff. Do you have a favorite character?
AndrewMe is probably Stitch.
AliceaOkay. Favorite movie.
AndrewUm that's a tough one. Because it depends on the genre and depends on because I I mean, yes, while Star Wars is technically under Disney, I still don't consider it Disney
AndrewNathan
Fair.
AndrewI’m still old school. Um, plus the original ones that I like were pre-Disney. Yeah. I will say Rogue One, though, however, a very underrated and one of the better Star Wars. I also so that say that Andor is one of an underrated, very great series as well. Uh so I do enjoy those as well. Old school cartoon would probably be the great mouse detector.
AliceaNice
Andrewdetective, yeah. Yeah.
NathanDeep pull, I love it.
AndrewYep. Um, with Ratigan and and um what was the bat's name? Figment? No.
MerFidget.
AndrewFidget.
AliceaYeah.
AndrewUm, so uh and then newer favorite movie? Uh that's a tough one. I have to think about that one. I I can't really fire off the cusp on that one.
NathanNo worries. You can let us know later.
AliceaYeah.
AndrewOkay, yes, sir.
AliceaDo you have a favorite ride?
AndrewI used to love rock and roller coasters, but unfortunately my neck cannot endure the the force because of a neck injury. Um, but I would say at one point it will would probably have been rock and roller coaster.
AliceaDisney World or Disneyland?
AndrewI've experienced more of Disney World than land. So I can't really say if I had a good enough comparison. I think I've only been to Disneyland once. Okay. So yeah, to be determined.
NathanDisney World then.
AndrewYep. Yeah, Disney World.
AliceaOut of all the individual parks that you've been to, which one's your favorite?
AndrewEpcot.
NathanAlicia approves.
AliceaYes. Do you have a favorite hotel or resort?
AndrewUm, I've never stayed there, but I do find the um the Riviera very nice.
MerFavorite ship?
AndrewThe wonder. Hands down.
NathanThat is the right answer.
AndrewFollowed by the treasure.
AliceaAll right.
NathanAlso the right answer, and in that order.
AliceaMine's flipped.
NathanNope, you're wrong. It's fine.
AliceaNo, I'm not wrong. I'm wrong, in your opinion, for what you like. I'm right for me.
NathanYeah, that's what matters. What I like, in my opinion. That's the only thing that matters here, right?
AliceaYour favorite restaurant.
AndrewMmm. Do love me from Palo.
AliceaIt's a good one. Favorite Disney snack.
AndrewThe damn popcorn. The smell that gets me every time, and I'm a popcorn sucker anyway, so.
NathanWell, and then they they go and overdo the aromas to entice you to go buy all that stuff, too. So of course.
AndrewAnd then I would say second would probably be churros.
AliceaYes.
MerThat's the right answer.
NathanThat's the right answer.
AndrewOkay.
NathanMer's listened to this show before. She knows. Congratulations, Doc. You survived. I'm proud of you. See?
AndrewIt was easy. Oh, I would have to say, probably my overall favorite movie.
NathanYeah.
AndrewTreasure Planet.
AliceaOh, that's such a good one. Nathan, have you even seen that?
NathanTreasure Planet. I don't think I have.
AndrewI am disowning you now.
MerOh, you must rectify that.
AliceaThat's one of the things we need to do, is like I want to go through all of Disney animation and watch the movies, and maybe we'll talk about them. Who knows?
NathanOh.
AndrewHow can you not know who Morph is? He's such a lovely little creature. Oh, Nate.
NathanI know what flubber is. Is that does that count?
AliceaNo.
NathanDifferent? Okay.
AndrewDifferent.
NathanAll right. Well, I have homework.
AndrewAnd I have a charts to do.
NathanWell, thanks so much, you two, for joining us. This was great to catch up. I'm glad you had a wonderful trip to uh England and Scotland and Ireland and Jurassic Park.
MerThank you for having us. It was great to talk about it.
AndrewThank you. It's been a huge fun.
NathanYes. Well, we'll we'll have to cruise with you again sometime. Maybe. Maybe. We'll see.
AndrewWe'll see.
NathanWe'll see what happens.
AndrewRectify the treasure planet thing, but then we'll talk.
NathanAll right. Fair enough. Fair enough. All right. Thanks again, you two. We'll talk soon.
AndrewBye.
